always does. Has to do with what those two commands actually do. Vista might be better about this, I don't know. I saved a bookmark to Ned Slider's post about how to switch WinXP over to AHCI, "after the fact". It's an alternate forum, so I'll resist posting a link and just suggest you google "HOWTO: enable AHCI mode after installing Windows" "Ned Slider".

On rare occasions Windows will detect a disk and not assign a drive letter. When this happens you'll see it in DM, but not in My Computer. If this happens, go start >settings >Administrative Tools >Computer Management. Open the 'disk management' tab thingy, find the disk, right click on a partition. Removing via Device Manager first is a Good Idea but may not always be necessary. FWIW, if I remove a disk via device manager and then later reattach it, Windows often fails to see it. Uninstall doesn't usually trigger this, but 'disable' pretty much always does. Has to do with what those two commands actually do.

I keep anything I don't need every time out of the PC to keep it silent and use eSATA enclosure for the storage. I can start enclosure while PC is running and external drives will show up. But still looking for a way to shutdown the enclosure once I don't need ext drives anymore.

Edit: Further FWIW, but I've been doing hot remove and hot add of disks since PATA days with very few issues. Explicit removability and redetect are nice, but the hardware can usually manage most of it without trouble. In the bad old days I'd flush a disk to make sure everything had been read/written completely, then uninstall it via device manager. Once that was done I'd disconnect power and then data (ALWAYS in that order!!). Hooking another disk's data and then power (ALWAYS in that order) would often prompt Windows to detect stuff, if not a quick 'detect now mofo' in device manager would make it show up.

Devcon to do it from the command line, and of course you could create a shortcut with the appropriate command line, set to run as minimized, and you have a double click method to do it. Fortunately, ICH10x is a SATA II controller. You do not have to install the ACHI drivers to get hot swappability support. You can disable non essential HDDs via Device Manager and any new drives that gets attach should automatically get auto detected and auto configured. If you does not happen then just go to Device Manager and force it to detect any hardware changes.

Hot swappability support was optional for SATA I and SATA 300 controllers. So it either a hit or miss on those controllers. On the other hand, Hot swappability support is required for SATA II controllers.

With second generation of the SATA interface and god knows how many new features in the Intel ICH10R is it still not possible to unplug the SATA drive ? Or is it just that Windows does not have a button to put hard disk offline ?

I highly recommend a nifty little utility from SysInternals called 'sync'. It does what it sounds like. Any data 'in flight' gets flushed out to disk. Using this and then unplugging a SATA disk should be pretty much bulletproof.
