In honor of the Tour of America's Dairyland Fond du Lac Commonwealth Classic bike race, local organizations have volunteered to upcycle bicycles that will be displayed along Fond du Lac's Main Street in June.

The students' spirits are far from deflated as they lace licorice in the wheel spokes and stick Skittles on scotch tape to the bars of their second candy themed bike.

Though a common theme for the bike was chosen, each student is allowed to convey that theme in their own way.

Chertos feels strongly about the creation of these bikes, saying: "I think it is important for our community to support the Commonwealth Classic bike race. Many of the bikes are being designed by kids and creative individuals who love art. Designing and recycling bikes into art is just another addition to the bike race itself."

Silhouettes of whimsical bird houses were cut from wood panels by students from the Horace Mann shop class and ALC students prime and paint the wood. Later it will be embellished with beads, buttons and other pieces. The bike that was decorated by ALC last year was similar, with large wooden flowers.

"I believe that art is very important," said Karissa Schneider, director of operations at the Boys and Girls Club. "We try to incorporate art into our activities here. We have guest artists and we try to get the kids interested in art projects."

"Once the bikes go up, the children will be able to go and see them on Main Street and take their parents to see what they've worked on," said Aimee Gleason, director of member services and organizer of the Ambassadors Club.

The decision was made, however, to keep the old bike and hang it from the ceiling in the classroom, as a lasting signature of those students in the 2012 13 ALC program.

"It really promotes the whole feeling of interaction, of creating something together, teamwork, as well as being able to show off their project later," said Alice Tzakais, an art teacher who works with the junior and senior students at ALC.

More than 1,300 children from the area annually attend the Boys and Girls Club. Many children stay in the program for several years, taking part in different projects and clubs, including art. Bikes also are being produced at the Boys and Girls clubs at Chegwin and Pier schools.

"We will be reusing bikes that were decorated by art students at Sabish Middle School and also the students from Pat Reiher's art class from St. Mary Springs Academy. Boys and Girls Club

At the Boys and Girls Club of Fond du Lac, members of the Ambassadors Club have been putting twice as much time and effort into their bike, as their first bike was stolen while it was set outside to dry. The Ambassadors Club has about 10 children and is considered the public face of the Boys and Girls Club.

Ambassador Club members work on the bike in the lobby and many others sit with them to watch, help and keep them company while they work after school.
